A step towards rebalancing the tea chain

Exceptional tea begins in the hands of the people who pick each leaf.

Across much of the tea world, that work is carried out mainly by women. Their skill shapes the flavour and quality of every blend, yet they often receive only a small share of the value tea creates.

Hand Picked Profit Shared is our commitment to sharing more of that value with the people who pick the tea we purchase.

tea workers received a profit-share payment in 2025

Nearly 7,000 tea workers received one in 2024. These payments were made to eligible tea workers in gardens across Assam in India, Kenya and Sri Lanka, where we have been rolling out the programme in partnership with our suppliers. The number is updated each year as the programme grows.

What this has achieved so far

In 2024, the bonus helped close, on average, around half of the living wage gap for those who received it.
The programme is designed to scale responsibly, adapting to local conditions and working in partnership with the gardens from which we source.

Strengthening financial literacy for women in tea

Strengthening financial literacy for women in tea

In many tea-growing regions, payments are still made in cash, which can limit access to banking and financial services, particularly for women.

As part of the programme, we are supporting a shift towards digital payments in tea gardens, working with suppliers and local partners.

Alongside this, financial literacy workshops are helping workers build confidence in managing their income and engaging with formal banking systems.

“That money helped us a great deal. Some of our children are still studying and we need to pay tuition fees and transport because their school is far. My wish for the future is only that my son can get a good job.”

A practical step

Hand Picked Profit Shared contributes toward closing the living wage gap. It does not solve the challenge alone.

Achieving living wages across the tea sector requires collaboration between producers, brands, retailers and consumers. This programme is our contribution within the relationships we can influence.

Looking ahead

We aim to expand the programme further, increasing participation across sourcing regions and supporting financial literacy alongside digital payments.

Because great tea should be shared with fairness.  Learn more about how Hand Picked Profit Shared works and explore our Programme Framework & Transparency in our FAQs.
