A BIG YEAR FOR SUSTAINABILITY

Our third pillar requires reducing the impact our business has on the planet. Throughout the last year, we have worked to make the activities we undertake even more environmentally friendly. It’s all part of our commitment to minimise our impact on the environment by:

Cutting out non-recyclable/non-biodegradable packaging. Offsetting the environmental impact at point of product consumption.

ELIMINATING EMISSIONS

OUR TEA PRODUCTION HUB

We have invested in the largest privately-owned solar panel in the RAK Free Zone, a sign of our efforts to enhance our renewable energy portfolio and support a smooth transition to fossil-free energy use.
To make our refrigeration systems more efficient, in alignment with the Montreal Protocol, we have made a commitment to reduce use of hydrochlorofluorocarbon refrigerants at our facility. HCFCs, such as R22, are known to deplete the ozone layer. And at our UAE Facility, these are being replaced with environmentally friendly refrigerant 410A.

Our commitment to the GO GREEN office programme and the initiatives we have put into place have saved 110 reams of paper compared to our usage in 2019.

TECHNOLOGY

In 2021, we explored new innovations in technology to automate our process and switch to paperless operations. We saved 1,113 reams of paper, the equivalent of 5 pine trees.

STORAGE AND MOVEMENT

By replacing wooden pallets with slip sheets from our tea suppliers, we eliminated the use of wooden pallets entirely, saving 338 trees a year.

PACKAGING

We switched to Triplex board which is 100% recycled and makes up 67% of all our packaging. We now use recyclable cellophane in our 20 enveloped Teabags and packet tea which makes up 17% of total cellophane use.

We eliminated 1.5 tons of cellophane plastic by switching to glued cartons for our 500g packet teas.

CSR

Our RAK, UAE plant swapped 10kg of food each day for outsourced manpower. This reduced our in-house food wastage and fed the equivalent of 12,000 people.

Our factory also donated 4,700kg of blended tea, the equivalent of 2.35 million cups, to the Al-Rahma Charity.
