Marlow's painting is a fine documentation of the architectural details of Blackfriar’s Bridge. The bridge is crowned by Sir Christopher Wren's masterpiece, St Paul’s Cathedral. The painting hangs in the ‘White Room’ of 10 Downing Street, the official residence of British Prime Ministers.

Built on the banks of the Thames after the previous buildings were destroyed by fire in 1834, the Victorian Gothic architecture is the result of a competition. Consisting of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, as well as 1000 other rooms, this is one of London's most famous landmarks.

This painting captures the tense moment before the pistol is fired to start the St. Leger, the world’s oldest classic turf race, first run in 1776. The event, at Doncaster in England, was organised by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, a prominent politician and former Prime Minister.

The artist has captured the spirit of excitement and sense of occasion in this painting of the opening of Tower Bridge. With its raising road section which allows both road and river traffic, and elegant Victorian architecture, Tower Bridge is the most recognisable bridge over the River Thames.
