We are honoured to share an update on a project that holds a special place in our hearts: our partnership with the Child in Need Institute India (CINI). For the past five years, we have collaborated with CINI and our proud of the meaningful difference they’ve had in the Assam tea gardens. Together, we have championed change and provided vital support for woman through childbirth, motherhood and beyond.

To date, the partnership has:

  • Supported 1,046 women in Assam with improved maternity services
  • Enhanced the health and safety of children in the tea gardens, by providing special support during the first 1000 days of their lives
  • Nourished 886 children through our nutrition programme
  • Created child-friendly tea gardens, with a focus on health, nutrition and sanitation
  • Held sexual health events for over 100 adolescents, discussing topics such as abuse, safety and self-confidence

CINI works with women who are either tea workers themselves or who are from tea worker’s families.  These women are invited to become part of women’s groups which have been created in every tea garden to educate them on topics such as health, nutrition, good hygiene practices, menstrual health and hygiene, education and protection of their children. As part of CINI’s outreach, the Indian Government is providing counselling support within the villages. This counselling includes basic health and counselling services for pregnant and lactating mothers, new born children, children under 5 years of age, and adolescents.

CINI also aims to empower local community members and provide advocacy for equal participation. This is facilitated through creating committees at which members of local governance bodies, representatives from the tea gardens, members of the local community and most importantly women and adolescents attend.

We’re so grateful of the impact that CINI is having within the tea growing regions in Assam and supporting the women and children within the tea gardens.
