Today, 4th February 2025, marks World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of a disease that continues to affect millions globally. In 2022, there were nearly 20 million new cases of cancer worldwide. With new cases expected to rise to 29.9 million per year by 2040, cancer remains a major global health challenge.
We’re proud to announce the launch of regular health screening programmes and awareness sessions within selected tea gardens in Sri Lanka. Working with our partner, Horana Plantations, these educational initiatives are essential in helping women identify and mitigate cancer risks. Our goal is to improve health screenings for women in the tea gardens, reducing the need for hospital admissions at the Razavi Medical Complex in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In 2010, we built this national cancer hospital and gifted it to the Ministry of Health of Sri Lanka to enhance cancer care and healthcare services across the country. We are committed to improving the well-being of workers in the tea gardens, and this new screening programme aims to promote education, ensure early treatment, and improve health outcomes.
Building the Razavi Medical Complex in Sri Lanka is one of our proudest achievements. It reflects our deep commitment to giving back to the communities that have given us so much. Sri Lanka is one of our key tea-sourcing countries, and we are proud to have built a state-of-the-art, seven-story cancer hospital that serves millions of patients annually. It remains the only cancer hospital in Sri Lanka to provide free care.
Last year, our partner in Japan, Tominaga Boeki Kaisha (TBK), funded critical repairs and the restoration of the hospital’s gynaecology ward, ensuring that the facility continues to serve as many patients as possible.
Ahmad Tea funded the hospital’s design and construction in collaboration with the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health. The facility provides:
- 373 beds for adult patients
- 5 operating theatres
- 12 surgical ICU beds
- A day chemotherapy unit
- An emergency treatment unit
At Ahmad Tea, our purpose is to improve lives through tea. We support long-term solutions and donate a portion of our profits to vulnerable communities worldwide. We are grateful to our tea drinkers, partners, and supporters—without you, projects like the Razavi Medical Complex would not be possible.
Join us in spreading kindness this World Cancer Day.
