World Book Day 2024

Nothing beats reading a great book while sipping a delicious cup of tea – perfect escapism and a great way to tune the world out. This World Book Day we’re going on step further and suggesting books which have been inspired by the wonderful world of tea. Our selection of novels beautifully weave the culture, tradition, and the magic of tea into their pages.

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lane See

This novel is based in China and takes the reader on a poignant journey with Li-yan, a young girl, as she navigates the complexities of tradition, motherhood, and identity. Tea, particularly Pu’er tea, is an integral part of the Akha culture, and the novel beautifully captures the rituals associated with its cultivation.

The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly

This historical novel is based in London and follows Fiona Finnegan, a determined young woman who rises from the slums to establish a successful tea business. This book incorporates vivid descriptions of the tea trade and perfectly describes the aroma of fine blends.

The Tea Master and the Detective by Aliette de Bodard

This science fiction novel that blends space exploration with the calming ritual of tea. Set in a spacefaring society, the story follows The Shadow’s Child, a spaceship, as it brews tea for meditation and connection with the universe. The novel skilfully incorporates the cultural significance of tea even in the far reaches of outer space, creating a unique and enchanting reading experience.

The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah
